About the Gearing Up Off-Road Programme
Gearing Up is the name given to Cycling Ireland’s discipline specific cycling skills programmes. Gearing Up Off-Road deals with the specific fundamental skills required for cycling in an off-road environment.
Gearing Up Off-Road will build on the basic cycling skills learned by riders in the Sprocket Rocket programme. Riders who have not taken part in the Sprocket Rocket programme may take a little longer to acquire the Gearing Up Off-Road skills.
Mountain biking offers the potential for greater skill development than any other cycling discipline. Consequently most riders will need to devote considerable thought, energy and practice time to the skills covered in the Gearing Up Off-Road Programme.
Gearing Up Off-Road is the first stage of development for the rider in an off-road context. Progression on to the Go Mountain Bike programme offers further development opportunities to riders who complete the Gearing Up Off-Road programme.
Who can deliver Gearing Up Off-Road
Those people delivering the programme should hold a Cycling Ireland coaching qualification or a Mountain Biking Leadership qualification and should take care not to exceed their coaching remit. It should be acceptable to include pre-risk assessed trails of low technical difficulty and short duration as part of the session.
Cycling Ireland Mountain Bike coaches who do not hold a leadership qualification may wish to consider this as part of their personal development.
Individuals wishing to become a Gearing Up Off-Road Instructor are required to complete a Gearing Up Off-Road Instructor Course.
