Ryan Mullen Finishes 7th in Final of the Points Race at European U23 Track Cycling Championships

First Year Senior Mullen Impresses with Strong Points Race After Earlier Bronze Medal

Ireland’s Ryan Mullen has proven that he is a force to be reckoned with after leading the Finals of the Points Race to the halfway mark, before finishing in 7th Place overall. France’s Boudat took the Gold, with Schir (SUI) and Ramanau (BLR) taking Silver and Bronze.

With this being Mullen’s first year out of the Junior Ranks, the strength and determination displayed in the Points Races demonstrates the huge potential for the young Irish Rider. Mullen was involved in an early attack with 5 other riders, taking a lap, and 20 points to put him in the lead. In what was an aggressive and active race, Mullen was lying 5th with 10 laps to go, and dropped to 7th on the finish line. The Points Race is a 40km race around the 250m track, with Sprints for Points throughout the contest.

Eoin Mullen is also competing at the European Championships in Portugal, in the Sprint events, where he came 13th in his opening 200m qualifier, and was unfortunately knocked out in the Match Sprint against the Spanish Rider.

While Ireland does not have an indoor Velodrome in Ireland, we produce strong track cyclists who are able to compete on the World Stage. Already this year we have had significant success with Martyn Irvine winning the World Championships in the Scratch event. Ryan Mullen will be competing in the Scratch Race this afternoon, while Eoin Mullen races on Sunday in the Keirin.
