Bike for Life is a beginner's cycling programme, in which a cyclist is brought through the various skills and techniques involved in cycling where the focus is on learning and meeting new people. The programme has gone from strength to strength over the last number of years and this year we have been able to support even more activity through funding from projects like Sport Ireland's Dormant Accounts and Women In Sport as well as the HSE's Healthy Ireland initiative.

One group which recently completed a Bike for Life course supported by Women In Sport was through Galway Bay CC and some of the participants told us what they thought of the course.....

"I thought it was excellent. Well organised. Leaders very helpful, approachable and committed. A great way to spend a Saturday morning. I would recommend it to starters and hope to do it again" C.H.

" Would highly recommend it. I had not cycled since my teens. I missed a few of the sessions. Went yesterday and was delighted to be able to cycle to Moycullen. The leaders are so encouraging and informative and patient. Thanks. " K. C.

"From bike to life to 100k Western Lakes in 3 Months!! Spin to Kinvara today for coffee and home for lunch-would never have believed I could have done that. Thanks to all the committed volunteers for sharing their time and encouraging us. A great programme and well done Galway Bay Cycling Club" M.J.

"I found Bike for Life to be a wonderful experience, it can be quite intimidating to start cycling, but GBCC could not have been more welcoming, encouraging and helpful. They catered for all levels and the skill sessions for moving on to road usage was invaluable. The social aspect is great and definitely the icing on the cake. I highly recommend the Bike for Life initiative and hope if continues to go from strength to strength." Sara

"What the Cycle for life programme has meant to me can be summed up in what I like to call the 3 F’s:

Fitness- Through my involvement with the programme my fitness level has improved tremendously. I now have found an exercise that I enjoy, but that also pushes me to do more.

Freedom: The freedom of the open road. Because of the training (& advice) we received my confidence on the road has gone from zero to 100%.

Friendship: Through our Whats app group we keep in touch, encourage each other & have developed great friendship with like-minded women. I just love it. Mary S
