Cycling Ireland’s College of Commissaires organised a commissaire’s upgrade course (from B to A grade) over the weekend of the 25th and 26th January 2014 in the City North Hotel, Gormanstown. There were 9 commissaires in total on the course, with all four provinces represented. This was the first upgrade course for many years and was run of in a completely different format. The 9 commissaires were formed into groups of three with various scenarios given to each group to discuss and one from each group then making a presentation on behalf of the group to the other groups and the three tutors, Jack Watson, Gary McIlroy and Paul Watson, who facilitated the course.
The various scenarios and their presentations lasted for a day and a half and the 9 attendees were then faced with written and oral examinations. All agreed that the scenarios were much more effective than just reading rules and discussing their application.

The final stage of the process is an assessment conducted by one of the tutors on each commissaire on a race where they will be working as the Chief Commissaire.
