Ciara Doogan lying Fifth in Omnium at European Championships

After three races in the Women’s Junior Omnium Ciara Doogan is lying in 5th place at the UEC Track Juniors and U23 European Championships in Montichiari, Italy today. The Donegal teenager has amassed 90 points at the end of day one, just 2 points off 4th placed Jessica Roberts (GB). On day two of the Men’s Junior Omnium Xeno Young raced outstandingly before taking ill in the final Points Race, and being listed as a DNF. Fintan Ryan finished 9th in the Men’s U23 Scratch Race, and in the Women’s U23 Scratch Race Autumn Collins finished 16th. Yesterday the Irish Team enjoyed the success of Mark Downey when he won a silver medal in the Men’s U23 Points Race. The UEC Track Juniors and U23 European Championships take place in Montichiari Velodrome in the Brescia region of Italy, and run from the 12-17 July.

After the racing today Track Coach David Muntaner was impressed with the riding of the team, noting that Young had been riding extremely well until heat played a role in his Points Race; “Xeno had been racing good all day. In the Points Race he got a lap, and went again, he almost got another lap, but fell ill; heat played a part.” Doogan started off slowly in the Omnium with the Scratch Race before clocking the 4th fastest time in the Pursuit. Muntaner was pleased with her time of 2.29.311 saying “Ciara got a similar time to the other day in the IP, that’s good to do. She did a really good Elimination Race then after that.”

In the U23 Scratch Race Ryan and Collins rode well, Muntaner described the racing as fast; “Autumn did a good race, there were lots of attacks, and she stayed well in the bunch. Fintan was attacking a lot, and went in one break, but when they were caught it was the next break was the good one that stuck. You can’t be in all the breaks.”

Tomorrow will see Doogan in action in day two of the Women’s Junior Omnium, while Josie Knight begins the Women’s U23 Omnium and Nicole Gorry will compete in the Women’s Junior Keirin. This weekend eleven Irish riders will compete in twenty four events in one of the major events in junior and U23 track cycling. The UEC Track Juniors and U23 European Championships take place in Montichiari Velodrome in the Brescia region of Italy, and run from the 12-17 July.
