A Date for Your Diary: Cycling Campaign AGM Monday 8th August We're beginning to prepare for our Annual General Meeting 2016 - our most important meeting of the year when we reflect on the last 12 months and plan for the next 12. If you have strong ideas on the direction our campaign should take - what are we doing right, what are we missing? - then come along on 8th August and let us know.
Crucially we are seeking suitable candidates for Chairperson for the next year. This role is all about driving the Campaign forward, chairing and setting the agenda for our monthly meetings, and being the figure-head for cycle campaigning in Dublin. If you are interested in this role, please email info@dublincycling.ie by Friday 29th July explaining briefly (say, in less than 300 words) why you think you are suitable!
There are, of course, other roles for which we will be seeking support at the AGM - we'll have details in next month's newsletter. | | 
National Bike Week 2016 - Did You Notice? Dublin Cycling Campaign, along with many groups nationwide, hosted a variety of events nationwide to celebrate all things BIKE, during Bikeweek from 11th to 19th June last (PDF, 15MB). Weather played a big factor in many events with some poor turnouts, but some of our Bike Tours in the Phoenix Park managed to attract the crowds and the sun! - see photo! We have had great reports from our sister groups in Sligo and Cork on different events, some with unusual twists. The three major Dublin events; City Centre Cycle, Bikefest, and the Irish Cargo Bike Championships were all hit by bad weather and numbers were down on 2016. A lot of organisation goes into the events, but is it worth it, and is Cycling nationally moved on as a result? These are questions being asked, and we would love to have your opinion on the value of Bike Week in promoting cycling nationally. Do you have any great ideas on how it can be improved? Cycle Safety Talk at Zendesk Kudos to software company Zendesk for contacting Dublin Cycling Campaign and arranging a cycle safety talk on 30 June 2016 in its offices at Grand Parade in Ranelagh.
The session was all about raising the staff’s awareness of how to remain safe on the roads and be particularly conscious of the more common and serious collision types (related to the movements of heavy goods vehicles, being ‘doored’ by cars, being cut off by left-turning motor vehicles, deep pot holes etc.). Appointment of Professor Donal O’Shea as Honorary President of Cyclist.ie Cyclist.ie – The Irish Cycling Advocacy Network – is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Donal O’Shea as its first Honorary President. Prof O’Shea is a consultant endocrinologist specialising in obesity/overweight and is Chair of the Policy Group on Obesity at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. He is also a member of the Government’s Healthy Ireland Council.
“In the race to become the most obese country in Europe, Ireland looks set to win. Latest predictions estimate that by 2030, 90 per cent of Ireland’s population will be overweight or obese, the highest projected level of any European country.”

Professor Risteard Mulcahy, Campaign member - RIP We were saddened to hear of the passing of cardiologist and pioneering public health campaigner in Ireland Professor Risteard Mulcahy. Risteard was a member of Dublin Cycling Campaign since its foundation in the early 1990's.
He was particularly active in the early years of the Campaign when Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr John Gormley, set up the Lord Mayor's Commission on Cycling with the brief of mapping out a proposed cycle network for Dublin City. Read more... | |

Lessons from Velo-City Public talk Mon 11th Velo-city Global is the biennial gathering of key figures involved in the development of everyday cycling all around the world. This year's event was held in Taipei, Taiwan and at our July public meeting, we’ll be discussing the best ideas that emerged from the conference.
Join us on Monday 11th of July at 8pm at the Central Hotel where Will and Barry will be sharing with us the sheer energy and momentum for change that such a worldwide gathering of cycling experts can generate.
Will Andrews, one of Dublin Cycling Campaign's former Chairpersons, travelled from his base in New Zealand to Taipei on our behalf. Joining Will was Ballymena-based Barry Flood. Barry is a board member of both Cycling UK (formerly known as CTC), a mainly UK-based campaigning organisation with 66,000 members, and a Vice-President (and Treasurer) of the European Cyclists' Federation, based in Brussels. | | 
Time for Action! From inspiration of the very engaging Bike Week talk by Dr Cara Augustenborg (read our Q&A with Cara) to her subsequent blog on Ireland's Transport Silence and UN Environment Programme's call for policies that support bicycle use, it's now time to put some pressure on to have cycling centre stage as a solution to some real world problems.

Moon Cycle to Dunsink Observatory For the second year in a row, Dublin Cycling Campaign is proud to be collaborating on the Festival of Curiousity and to be running the fabulous Moon Cycle to Dunsink Observatory. This event will take place on Thursday night 21st July - full details here.
We'll be looking for some help on the night, so please contact us if you can lend a hand (ideally by chatting to us at/after our monthly meeting on Monday 11th July.

A Bill for Minimum Passing Distance Law (MPDL) in Early Stages The early workings of the proposed legislation are being done by Ciarán Cannon TD, ably assisted by Regina Doherty TD. Ciarán is a passionate bicycle rider and is off to do the Etape du Tour in a few days time. (We wish you well Ciaran!) Regina and her family are active cyclists and realise the potential benefits of this law.

Cork Cycling Festival The Cork Cycling Festival is run by a voluntary team who just love bikes as a great way to get about and want more people to enjoy cycling. The festival is entirely free to the public, welcoming all ages and walks of life with a special focus on family-friendly events. This year’s festival will have over 30 events with something for everyone - day, lunchtime and evening cycles. Check it out from the 15-24th of July! | |

Sligo's Successful Bike Buffet Sligo Cycling Campaign’s Bike Week Buffet an outstanding success! On Thursday 19th June, over one hundred people assembled in Clevreagh Park ready to set off on the Campaign's inaugural Bike Buffet. Chairperson Gemma Woods explained that the Cycling Campaign members were looking for an interesting idea to mark Bike Week and became aware that their neighbours in Westport have hosted several successful Bike Buffets. Gemma floated the idea to Emer Concannon of Sligo County Council and received enthusiastic support.
The idea of the buffet is that participants cycle from venue to venue and have one course of their meal in each venue, what a fab idea! Read more about the work of Sligo's Cycling Campaign here. | | | |
