Funding boost for amenities including cycleways and blueway

Over €8 Million in funding has been announced for the development and maintenance of outdoor amenities with trails, cycleways and blueways sharing in the allocation. The Department of Rural and Community Development made public details of projects to be funded under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. 

 

Among the projects funded were cycling trails in Rossmore Forest Park, Co. Monaghan and the development of a new cycle route from Kingscourt, Co Cavan to Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan. The funding came about thanks to extensive campaigning which included representatives of Cycling Ulster.

 

Cycling Ulster Chair, Tommy McCague commented;

“It’s fantastic to see over €380,000 in funding secured from the Outdoor Recreation Scheme for cycling infrastructure in Cavan and Monaghan.

 

“Cycling Ulster representatives have been working in conjunction with others such as Emyvale Cycling Club, Monaghan County Council and locally elected representatives to deliver funding for these projects."

 

Cycling Ireland has also welcomed funding for projects nationwide which will assist in providing safe cycling infrastructure and deliver upon our vision of an island enhanced by cycling.

 

Funding approvals under the Outdoor Recreation Scheme include:

 

Mayo

€500k - Great Western Greenway – Major trail improvement works including 3km of new track.

 

Meath

€500k - Navan to Wilkinstown Greenway Phase 1 of Boyne Valley to Lakeland Greenway - Development of a Greenway from Navan to Wilkinstown. Works include construction, signage, furniture and lighting.

 

Monaghan

€289,355 - Rossmore Forest Park - Family Cycle Route - Development of a 2.5km family cycle route, including upgrade of barrier, path improvement, boardwalk and signage.

 

Offaly

€313,280 - Completion of Linkage of Grand Canal Greenway to Royal Canal Greenway - Ballycommon to Kilbeggan Greenway - Extension of the Grand Canal Greenway, involving high quality shared cycle way and footway through the upgrading of the existing disused towpath

 

Tipperary

€500k - Suir Blueway Tipperary Infrastructure Enhancement - Enhancement works to the existing canoe trail which forms part of the River Suir blueway project including access works, refurbishment

 

Westmeath

€500k - Recreation Hub at Grange South - Recreational Hub including 3km of new greenway

200k - Greenway Link from Castletown Geoghegan to the Old Rail Trail (Dublin to Galway Naitonal Cycleway)

Louth

€200k – Boyne Greenway – North bank to Drogheda - Clearance & drainage with surfacing and fencing, walls & signage

 

Roscommon

€200k - Cloonlarge Walk/Cycleway - Construction of walkway with Cycle route.

 

Waterford

€66,578 - Abbeyside Coastal Walk and Spur from Waterford Greenway: 'Dungarvan Surf and Turf Trail' - Improvement works to pathways and to accommodate bike parking.
