Irish National Cycling Championships Press Release

Time Trial route details revealed

Details of this years National Championship time trial course were revealed by Race Director Stevie McKenna at the recent launch event in Omagh. The course, which is based on a single 23 mile loop, breaks from traditional flat routes and features a challenging and hilly profile with almost 1000ft of climbing.

McKenna said it’s going to be one to remember, “The course is a Worlds style course and it will certainly remove the predictability of flat out and back courses. It throws a bit of everything at the rider, but the first half will be the decisive element with a lot of hilly tough terrain. Whilst the second half of the course is flat and more downhill, the road back to Omagh is on really exposed countryside, which can offer some really tough wind conditions. I expect riders won’t forget this course in a hurry!”. A shorter out and back course will be used for paracyclists (excluding Tandems, M & F categories who will ride the main course).

Omagh Wheelers plan to give riders a chance to try the course in advance of the main day by running an open ‘test event’ on Sunday 31st May. The event is open to all categories of rider, including paracyclists, so they can compare themselves and their times against the world’s best riders. Online pre-registration is now available via the Cycling Ireland website and event booking system. Paracyclists must pre-register online. Pre-registration closes on 20th May, after which the cost of entries will increase on the day of the event.
