Cycling Ireland are saddened to hear about the passing of Jim McArdle last Thursday. Jim was a huge supporter of Cycling and the promotion of Irish Cycling, between his Friday morning preview and his Monday morning reports of the weekend events with the Irish Times to his commentary of the weekend domestic races on RTE radio on Sunday evening. Our condolences go out to Jim’s family Derek, Brendan and Paula at this sad time for the family.
The death has taken place of long-time Irish cycling journalist Jim McArdle who worked for The Irish Times for decades.
Jim, who was in his mid 80s, had long retired but was a very well known fixture on the Irish cycling scene for years.
He wrote about Irish and international cycling in the Irish Times during all of the Kelly-Roche era.
Indeed, his career spanned decades, from the 1960s up to the late 1990s, including covering the Tour de France in Ireland in 1998.
Jim was an avid cyclist himself and was a member of Dublin Wheelers Cycling Club.
He did fantastic work down the years to keep Irish cycling in the news.
As well as his work in The Irish Times, on Sunday evenings he was a regular contributor to RTE Radio 1 in the days when it ran radio reports on domestic cycling.
He passed away on Thursday and his funeral, details below, takes place in coming days.
Jim was predeceased by his wife Claire and son Tony. He is survived by by his sons Brendan and Derek and daughter Paula.
Reposing at Staffords Funeral Home, Golf Links Rd, Portmarnock, on Monday 21st from 4.30pm to 6.30pm.
Removal Tuesday morning to St Sylvester’s Church, Malahide, arriving for 10am. Funeral Mass followed by burial in Mulhuddart Cemetery
