Matt Brammeier confirmed for National Road Race Championships

Matt Brammeier (MTN Qhubeka) confirms for Nationals line-up

Prolific Irish Professional Matt Brammeier, has added his name to a fantastic line up for the Irish National cycling championships this coming weekend in Omagh, Co Tyrone. Brammeier is a five-time Irish National champion, having won the national road race on 4 occasions (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) and the time trial once (2011). This makes him the most successful rider in these events in recent times. He currently rides for pro continental team MTN-Qhubeka / Samsung, having joined the African team in mid-January.

And it seems he is in perfect form for the big event having blasted to a career best win at the weekend ZLM Toer in Holland. “I saw the opportunity at the end of the stage when the peloton stalled a bit so I thought I’d give it a go; 99 times out of 100 it doesn’t work but today was that one time it did work,” a delighted Brammeier said at the finish.

Brammeier is an extremely strong rider who loves a tough race. He makes a habit of getting into breakaways (his forays off the front at the Tour of Flanders come to mind) and he’s certainly gone a long way in putting the ‘Qhubeka’ name on the lips of people around the world this year. His team had this to say;

“Matt has been a great fit for MTN-Qhubeka / Samsung and he, just like all our other international riders, has been really good at mentoring our less experienced African riders. As a team that races to raise awareness for Qhubeka, a charity that helps move the people of Africa forward by providing them with bicycles, Matt has been great in supporting the team’s #BicyclesChangeLives campaign.

Matt does not win a lot of races because he is a team player and a true fighter. His attitude has made him an invaluable classics rider and his triumphs in the national champs serve as proof to his fighting spirit. Matt will head into the Irish national champs off the back of a big block of racing this year which included all the cobbled classics, Tour de Yorkshire, Amgen Tour of California and World Ports Classic. Matt is also on the long list for the teams Vuelta a Espana squad and we know the Irishman will be motivated to show off the national colours at the Spanish grand tour.”

Given his history in this particular event, his recent run of form and the motivation of the Vuelta, it will be a safe bet to say Brammeier will be in the running in the Elite race on Sunday 28^th. If successful, the Nation’s colours could be on show on TV all over the World later this year attacking the World Tour peloton.
