Teenagers Kevin McCambridge and Lara Gillespie were best of the Irish on Day 2 of the UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire.

McCambridge put in an impressive display to finish 20th in the Junior Men’s Time Trial, raced over a hilly 27.6-kilometre course. Averaging 40.856 km/h the Ballymena athlete finished in a time of 40:31:86.

Teammate, Finley Newmark from Tyrone measured his effort well to finish 44th in a time of 42:25.09. The race was won by Antonio Tiberi of Italy, with Enzo Leijnse of the Netherlands second and Marco Brenner of Germany in third.

In the Junior Women’s Time Trial, Lara Gillespie opened her account at the World Championship with a solid ride to secure 20th, equalling McCambridge’s performance in the Junior Men’s competition. Conditions were treacherous during the morning session as the rain came down heavy. Gillespie displayed her bike handling skills as she managed to stay upright after her wheel clipped a cat’s eye on the road. The race was won by Aigul Gareeva of Russia.

Gillespie will be joined by Meave Gallagher and Lucy O’Donnell for the Road Race on Friday from 8:40am while Kevin McCambridge, clearly in good form, will team up with Archie Ryan for the Junior Men’s Road Race on Thursday from 12:10pm.

Tour de l'Avenir stage winner, Ben Healy, and U23 Time Trial National Champion, Michael O’Loughlin, represent Ireland in the U23 Time Trial which gets underway at 10:20am on Tuesday. Anna Turvey and Kelly Murphy line up in the Elite Women's Time Trial from 2:50pm.
