Who was the best domestic based male rider in 2017?

The talent of our riders is undeniable, with many of our young riders coming through the domestic scene before being dominant on the world stage. The below nominations have been submitted by the Cycling Ireland Provinces and Commissions.




Chris Burns - Banbridge Cycling Club
The Banbridge CC rider enjoyed a brilliant year, which included winning the C1-C5 Paracycling Time Trial League 2017. Chris also had a solid year representing his club on the domestic scene, and he will be hopeful that he can get back to representing Ireland in paracycling soon.



Dermot Trulock - Lucan Road Club
Dermot has worked hard throughout the year at the highest level of domestic racing, and he has been rewarded with his best season yet. The Lucan CRC rider placed numerous times in major races both at home and abroad, and has notched up five victories. He ended up as the top U23 rider of the season and continues to battle at the front of the peloton.



Ethan Downey - Clann Eirean Cycling Club
The Clann Eireann teenager has been one of the shining stars of this Irish domestic season. Ethan won a string of domestic A3 and Junior races this season. He was also involved with the Ulster and Irish team supporting his teammates in events like the Welsh and Irish Junior Tours. He rounded off a fantastic season by lifting the national road race title in Derry in September.




JB Murphy - Murphy Surveys Killcullen Cycling Club and Xeno Young - Powerhouse Sport
Both of these young riders certainly had a 2017 to remember. In the European Track Championships both men claimed junior silver medals with Murphy coming second in the Elimination race and Young getting his silver in the Individual Pursuit. The two lads then went on to medal at the worlds in Italy, with Xeno again taking silver in the Individual Pursuit and JB bringing home a bronze in the Points Race. They both deserve to be recognised for these fantastic results.




Killian Callaghan - Unattached Leinster
Killian has had a tremendous year as an Under 21 rider in the Enduro World Series. This year he was crowned EWS Champion in his category with plenty of time to spare such was the extent of his dominance. It’s been a meteoric rise for Ireland’s first ever Enduro World Champion who only took up mountain biking four years ago. He’s also managed to achieve this feat without factory backing and while holding down a full-time job.



Matthew Malone - Ratoath BMX Club
Matthew completed an Irish BMX double this season claiming the National Series title and All Ireland title for 2017. He is also a member Irish BMX high performance team, and competes on an international level, if the young rider continues on this upward trajectory then this won’t be the last time he is nominated for Male Rider of the Year


Ronan Tuomey - MSL Mercedes-Benz Cork Giant
The Cork man has an outstanding season in 2017 finishing this year joint first Junior in rider rankings. Highlights for the 18-year-old included victory in the O’Leary’s Stone Kanturk Three-Day A2/A3 catagory race. He also secured a stage win in the Junior Tour of Ireland emerging victorious in stage four whilst competing for the Tarrant Skoda Munster team.
