Josie Knight set a new Junior record in the 500m time trial on the final day of the European Track Championships in Athens.

The Kerry-woman, racing as an Under 23 this week although still eligible to race as a Junior, has been fighting the effects of a crash in the Scratch race on Thursday night but showed signs of a return to form on the second day of action in the Women's Omnium.

Knight raced through her two-lap time trial in 38.3 seconds and battled back to complete a busy week by winning a sprint in the sixth and final race, the Points Race to finish 13th overall.

Meanwhile Autumn Collins was 15th in both the 500m Time Trial and the Flying Lap and moved up two positions overall in the final Points Race to complete the Women's Junior Omnium in 14th position.

Eoin Mullen was third in his heat of the Men's Under-23 Keirin and finished in the same position in his repechage thus missing out on a spot in the semi-finals.

Under the watchful eye of their new coach David Muntaner, the 2014 World Madison Champion, two Irish pairings took to the boards in international Madison competition for the first time.

Mark Downey and Seán Grimes were 11th in Heat One, missing out on qualification by two spots. Thomas Fallon and Javan Nulty were also 11th in Heat Two and neither pairing was disgraced in their first outing in a highly technical event.

Summing up a long week of tough championship action in Greece, High Performance Coach Brian Nugent reflected on a week of significant acquisition of vital top class racing experience for his young squad.

"That was an action packed week for the team," said Nugent. "The experience gained has been absolutely vital for future development of the programme.

"The sheer volume of races that each rider has competed in has been invaluable and the lessons learnt will shape their future.

"We brought a large squad here and the goal was to expose as many riders as possible to this type of environment. We also brought along new staff as well.

"This week has been crucial for this young group and it will significantly strengthen our talent pathway. A few new riders have broken through and that’s what it’s all about at this stage in the pathway.

"Nearly every rider has gone quicker and performed better than they have done before. It’s very encouraging for the future."
