The Tour of Ulster started this year in the in Moy, Robert Jon McCarthy (Team Monaghan) was the first attacker, but was caught soon after. After a flurry of attacks a of 9 man lead group established a 15 second lead by the time the race entered Cookstown with 15 miles covered. They were Matteo Cigala (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Ronan McLaughlin (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Anthony Walsh (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Jamie Blanchfield (Carrick Wheelers Cycling Club), Marc Potts (Cycling Ulster), Mark Dowling (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), Adam Stenson (TEAM BIKEWORX Celbridge), Robert Jon McCarthy (Team Monaghan) and Ian Richardson (UCD Cycling Club).


By the time 19 miles were covered, the race was all together.


Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club) was the next to attack the main field with 8 riders in pursuit. They were Sean Yelverton (Carrick Wheelers Cycling Club), Angus Fyffe (Cycling Ulster), Lindsay Watson (Cycling Ulster), Craig Rea (Phoenix CC), Conn McDunphy (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), Dermot Trulock (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), James Davenport (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team) and Cian O'Reilly (UCD Cycling Club).


By the time the race reached the 1st KOH of the day at 24 miles covered the 9 leaders had come together.


By the 4th KOH of the day with 54 miles covered the 9 leaders had over a 1 minute lead, but the main field behind were starting to split under the pressure being applied.


Cian O'Reilly (UCD Cycling Club) and Sean Yelverton (Carrick Wheelers Cycling Club) were dropped from the lead group on the climb.


Conn McDunphy (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club) then attacked out of the lead group and his lead grew to 35 seconds, but behind the 6 chaser had being joined by 15 riders to forma 21 man chase group. The consisted of Matteo Cigala (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Seán Lacey (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Liam Dolan (Cuchulainn CC), Angus Fyffe (Cycling Ulster), Lindsay Watson (Cycling Ulster), Jude Sands (Newry Wheelers CC), Javan Nulty (North Down CC), Craig Rea (Phoenix CC), Dermot Trulock (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), James Davenport (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), Simon Ryan (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), Toni Ballester Llobera (Team Sportactive Racing), Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club), Louis Carnec (UCD Cycling Club), Shane Power (Waterford Racing Club), Dermot Trulock (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), Mark O'Callaghan (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles Omagh), Jamie Blanchfield (Carrick Wheelers Cycling Club), Chris McGlinchey (Cycling Ulster), David Watson (The Bike House CC) and Darragh O'Mahony (Waterford Racing Club).


But with 15 miles to go 6 riders caught the lone leader. Matteo Cigala (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Seán Lacey (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Chris McGlinchey (Cycling Ulster), Dermot Trulock (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club) and Darragh O'Mahony (Waterford Racing Club).


This was to be the race winning move with Darragh O'Mahony (Waterford Racing Club) taking the stage.


The leader of the King of the Hills competition after day 1 is Dermot Trulock (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club).


The stage tomorrow starts at The Square, Moy (09.45 am) and finishing at The Square, Moy (1.30pm), and with the race going through the Mournes this 91.7 mile stage is another tough stage with 6 climbs on route.
