INVACARE PARACYCLING TT NEWS

Cycling Ireland are pleased to announce details of the two day Paracycling camp for developing Paracyclists on 1st & 2nd March 2014. The event will incorporate the 1st stage of the 2014 INVACARE Paracycling National Time Trial League. Following the success of the Ballaghaderreen CC event in March 2013 the camp has been identified as an ideal way to kick start the 2014 season.

DAY 1

Saturday 1st of March starts off with a “Come & Try” event in Ballaghaderreen GAA grounds from 11 am until 12.30 pm. This event is aimed at youth & novice riders and junior handcycles will be available courtesy of IWA Sports & Mayo Sports Partnership. Two tandem bikes will also be available for age groups 10 year olds upwards sponsored by Pat Towey TOPAZ for the ability day. Senior riders and coaches will be on hand to answer any questions parents may have on their children’s ability and options for newcomers to get started in the sport of Paracycling.

It’s down to business then on the Castlerea Road for the first stage of the INVACARE Paracycling Time Trial League over a 16km out & back circuit. The first rider will start off at 1pm with remaining riders starting at 1 min intervals. Immediately after the Time Trial, a training ride for aspiring riders will be headed up by Paracycling Development Team Coach Cathal Miller, (Paralympian from Beijing 2004 & London 2012).

It is then back to Kilmovee Community Centre (located at turnaround point of Time Trial) for some refreshments followed by a Nutrition Workshop scheduled to start at 7 pm. Mary Finn Nutritionist with Paralympics Ireland will provide advice and answer questions on nutrition in sport. The day will finish up with a debrief on the day’s activities, a question & answer session and Presentation of Time Trial prizes.

DAY 2

On Sunday 2nd March it is off to nearby Roscommon Town where Paracycling Ireland have linked up with the “Ronan McCormack Rosactive Weekend” and the Donamo Dynamos Cycling Club for a morning of Criterium Racing. The race around a 900M circuit kicks off at  10.am for hand cycles with 20 min racing followed by 5 laps of the circuit. Immediately afterwards the Tandems & solo bikes will take to the streets for 25 min racing & 5 laps for what promises to be an exciting hour to showcase disabled sports. Michael Ring TD Minister for Sports is expected to be on hand to officially start the event. Immediately afterwards youth & novice riders will get to do two laps of the criterium circuit in the “taking the dis challenge” in the company of the senior riders. Presentations & refreshments afterwards courtesy of the Ronan Mc Cormack committee.

Like all cycling disciplines Paracycling has taken huge strides this past few years and the success of the Irish Team at the London Paralympic Games has created huge interest. Cycling Ireland’s Management team are spread throughout the world with various duties including preparation for the Paracycling Track World Championships in April. We in the Paracycling Commission together with our new Development Team Coach Cathal Miller will strive to deliver a solid camp & keep everyone fighting for those elusive Irish Jerseys.
