Results Handcyclist Road Race Bilbao

Ciara Staunton has won the overall World Cup WH2 Series following another bronze medal today in the Handcycling Road Race. Staunton was third in her category on a tough 7.5km circuit at the UCI Para-Road World Cup in the Basque County, Spain today. This is the final World Cup in the three event series, and the last major competition for the riders before the Paralympic Games in Rio. Declan Slevin finished in 10th place in the MH3 Road Race, this was a particularly impressive performance considering the hot conditions. Tomorrow will see the tandems in action along with Colin Lynch in the MC2 and Eoghan Clifford in the MC3 Road Races.

Coach Neill Delahaye described the tough conditions for both riders saying “Ciara was third in her category. It is a seriously challenging course for handcyclists. Essentially it’s a 3.5km climb with a 3km descent and 1km flat. The heat factor is a significant factor with all riders of both sexes in all categories suffering in the morning session. Ciara worked very hard to finish where she did. For Declan 10th was a very strong result in a field of that size and quality, especially considering the terrain and heat. He was determined to better his TT result and really emptied himself to hit the top 10. This was a very good performance.”
