Cycling Ireland is saddened to hear of the passing of one of its most vibrant and passionate members, Richie Byrne. Richie had been battling cancer for the past year, sharing his journey publically through social media. This morning the cycling community has been shaken by the news (Thursday 29th September) of the passing of the mountain biker who had acted as a mentor to many.

Often referred to as the “Godfather” in the mountain bike community, Richie was a key volunteer in Cycling Ireland, and responsible for introducing many people to the sport through coached spins for beginners, more recently focusing on women and youths, with the “Little Giants” being an extremely popular cycling course with young riders.

The founder of Team Giant Dublin was not only responsible for the running of many mountain bike events; he was also a keen racer. Richie inspired many through his online documentation of his many adventures offroad, and his presence will be greatly missed both in the races and as mc at the side-lines.

Funeral details can be found HERE. Cycling Ireland would like to offer their condolences to Richie’s wife Carol and their daughter Sophie.
