Roche Finishes Men’s Elite Time Trial in 41st Place at the UCI Road World Championships, Ponferrada

Nicolas Roche has finished the Men’s Elite Time Trial at the Road World Championships in 41st position. The Team Tinkoff-Saxo rider rode a steady race against the clock, gaining time and places as the 47.1km race progressed. Roche’s finish time of 1.00.15.91 was not enough to repeat his placing of 13th last year. In the race for the World Title, Olympic Champion Bradley Wiggans (GBR) won gold, with defending World Champion Tony Martin (GER) settling for silver and Tom Dumoulin (NED) impressing with bronze. Focus for the Irish Team now moves to the Road Races, which start on Friday. The Championships run from Sunday 21st September until Sunday the 28th September.

This years’ Time Trial had a strong list of entries, and the 3.50.39 that Roche conceded to Wiggans put him in 41st position, the same time difference last year would have secured him a top 25 position.

Speaking after the Time Trial team manager Kurt Bogaerts said “We set out a plan for Nico, and he followed it quite well, but the result is not what we hoped for. We cannot be too disappointed with it, it’s a big gap, but last year if you were 3.50 behind you would have been a lot closer. Compared to last year where he had more hopes placed in the time trial, this year he is looking more at the road race, and will do a really good road race. He has three days to recover for it on Sunday. He had only two days to recover for today after a really hard team time trial with Saxobank, but now has more time. We really are here for Sunday, we have a lot of chances with Nico, Dan and Philip, and they all showed really good form in the Vuelta and the Tour of Britain.”

Tomorrow is a rest day, and the road races start on Friday, with the Women’s Junior Road Race and the Men’s U23 Road Race.

The Irish Team at the World Championships is sponsored by Armor-lux, PowerBar, Spin 11 and Dare2be. The UCI Road World Championships in Ponferrada, Spain, run from 21st September – 28th September.
