The Tour of Ulster started today in the Moy with 75.8 miles to cover over 7 laps of a 10 mile circuit. Shortly after the start 9 riders moved clear, they were Mark O'Callaghan (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Anthony Walsh (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Darnell Moore (Caldwell Cycles Omagh), Chris McGlinchey (Cycling Ulster), Lindsay Watson (Cycling Ulster), David McFall (Omagh Wheelers Cycling Club), Robert Jon McCarthy (Team Monaghan), David Watson (The Bike House CC) and Ian Richardson (UCD Cycling Club).


Robert Jon McCarthy (Team Monaghan) who was sitting in 2nd place overall was in the lead group and their advantage increased to 56 seconds after 20 miles covered, putting McCarthy (Team Monaghan) the virtual race leader on the road. At this point Ian Richardson (UCD Cycling Club) sat up from the lead group to go back to the main field to assist the chase with his team mate and race leader Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club).


The 8 leaders increased their lead to over 1 minute after 28 miles covered, but then the main field started to chase hard.


After 40 miles covered David McFall (Omagh Wheelers Cycling Club) got dropped from the lead group, and at this point the lead was 39 seconds.


The main field then stalled and the lead increased back to 59 seconds for the 7 leaders.


For the next 20 miles the gradually dropped until the leaders were caught with 8 miles to go


14 riders moved clear whuch included 2nd overall again Robert Jon McCarthy (Team Monaghan). The rest of the group were Matteo Cigala (Aqua Blue Sport Academy), Conor McCann (Caldwell Cycles Omagh), Marc Potts (Cycling Ulster), Craig Rea (Phoenix CC), Conn McDunphy (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), Dermot Trulock (Stagg Cycles Lucan Cycling Road Club), Mark Dowling (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), James Davenport (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), Michael Fitzgerald (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team), David Brody (Team iTAP), Keith Fox (Team Planet X Carnac), Toni Ballester Llobera (Team Sportactive Racing) andLewis Ferguson (The Bike House CC). the maximum advantage they got was 14 seconds, Kevin McKinney (CCT) & Robin Kelly (Waterford Racing Club) also joined the lead group.


But the race came together with 2km to go, and Simon Ryan (Strata3-Velorevolution Cycling Team won the bunch sprint to take the final stage.


Eoin Morton (UCD Cycling Club) retained his overall lead to win the 2017 race.
