Significant Funding Awarded to Cycling Clubs Through Sports Capital Grants

Cycling Ireland is delighted with the announcement of significant funding awarded to Cycling Ireland affiliated clubs, Local Sports Partnerships for cycling-related projects and directly to Cycling Ireland, through the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme.

Announced earlier this month by Catherine Martin T.D., Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, and Thomas Byrne T.D., Minister of State for Sport, Physical Education and the Gaeltacht, the 2024 allocation totals over €26 million across a range of sports nationwide.

As outlined by Minster Martin, the allocation of funding shows the commitment to increasing sports participation all over Ireland.

“Our sporting organisations are at the heart of our communities’ providing opportunities to people to participate in healthy activities and to enjoy the successes of their local teams and sporting heroes.

“I am delighted to confirm the largest ever allocation of grants for equipment under the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme. Minister Thomas Byrne and I are committed to providing continued supports to sporting organisations to increase participation in sport in communities across Ireland.”

Minister Martin added:

“I am confident that the revised allocations under the National Development Plan will also allow for significant funding to be allocated for capital works when the necessary assessments of applications are completed.”

2024 sees a significant increase in the funding awarded to cycling from that of 2023. The funding will go towards a range of projects and equipment, helping to grow and develop the sport across Ireland, making it more accessible than ever.

Over 30 clubs and Local Sports Partnerships will receive in excess of €500,000. Projects range from storage facilities and equipment to large scale club development.

Over €175,000 of the funding is going directly to Cycling Ireland.

Cycling Ireland projects include Technical Equipment, Capital Equipment Purchase for Cycling Ireland, Para-cycling Enabling Various Bikes and Track Bikes National Velodrome.

Speaking about the announcement, Cycling Ireland CEO James Quilligan said:

“To see such investment in cycling clubs across Ireland is brilliant. We have been working over the last year to significantly increase participation rates within cycling and to increase the accessibility of the sport. The Sports Capital Grant funding will make a huge different to cycling clubs and Local Sports Partnerships in Ireland.”
