Sixth for Ryan in Pursuit at Track Cycling World Championships, Cali

Ryan Finishes Sixth in Top Quality Field of World and Olympic Champions

Caroline Ryan finished the Individual Pursuit sixth in a time of 3.37.847 at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Cali, Colombia. Ranked number one pursuit rider in the world rankings, Ryan was always going to face a big challenge from riders like World Champion and World Record holder Sarah Hammer, and Team Pursuit Olympic Champion Joanna Rowsell. Later on tonight the Gold Medal will be decided between Hammer (USA) and Rowsell (GB), with Amy Cure (AUS) and Ganna Solovei (UKR) fighting it out for Bronze.

Speaking after the race Head Coach Brian Nugent said “Sixth place in the Worlds is a solid result. We would have liked to get closer to a ride off, but it didn’t work out that way. We’re not that disappointed as it shows she is still strong, and Caroline knows that anything can happen in the Points Race tomorrow night. We’ll keep pushing on for that.”

Ryan won a Bronze Medal in the Points Race at the World Championships in Melbourne in 2012, an event that requires tactics and endurance, as riders gain points at various stages in the 25km bunch race, and the rider who gains the most points in the winner.

Next up is Martyn Irvine, racing in the 40km Men’s Points Race, which starts at 2am Irish time. Irvine won silver in the Men’s Scratch Race last night.

The UCI Track Cycling World Championships take place in Cali, Colombia, from the 26th February to the 2nd March 2014.
