Declan Slevin was forced out of the Mens’ H3 Time Trial on the opening day of the UCI 2018 Para-cycling Road World Championships in Maniago, Italy when he suffered a crash. Slevin was the sole rider in action today in the championships which run from the 2nd – 5th August.
Tricky conditions ensued following a lightning storm which took place ten minutes before the start of his 13.6km Time Trial. The Westmeath Paralympian was the second starter in the MH3 category, which saw at least six riders fall foul of a lethal roundabout, forcing him out of the competition.
Tomorrow Paralympic Champions Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal compete in a bid to defend the world title that they won last year in the Women’s B Tandem Time Trial. They will be last to compete, starting at 4.18pm Irish time tomorrow.
Paralympic silver medallist Colin Lynch is first on the road in Maniano tomorrow, racing in the MC2 13.6km Time Trial. Up and coming talent Ronan Grimes will also be testing himself against the world’s best – competing in the MC4 category.
In the men’s tandems the Irish bikes have been performing strongly throughout this season. Peter Ryan and Sean Hahessy have been moving closer to that elusive podium at the World Cups, with Damien Vereker and Dermot Radfield hot on their tail.
