Four Irish riders were in action in the Omnium Competitions at the European Track Championships where Adam Stenson completed his two-day Men’s Junior event in a fine 10th place.

Having started with victory in the Scratch race yesterday, Stenson found the going tough in the 1km Time Trial and the Flying Lap which he completed in 15th and 14th places respectively.

He raced strongly in the final race of six, the Points Race, taking two laps and placing at four of the sprints to move up two places in the final overall standings.

The Women’s Junior Omnium kicked off in Athens today with Autumn Collins finishing 16th in the 7.5km Scratch Race. She followed that up with 17th in the 2km Pursuit and finished the first day with an encouraging 14th position in the Elimination Race.

Cormac Clarke completed the Men’s Under 23 Omnium in 17th position having managed a fine 11th fastest in the 1km Time Trial with a time of 1m05.319s, and 18th fastest in the Flying Lap.

Still feeling the effects of her crash in the Scratch Race, Josie Knight struggled through the first three races of the Women’s Under 23 Omnium. The Kerry rider finished 13th in the Scratch Race, the Individual Pursuit and the Elimination Race to sit 13th overall ahead of tomorrow’s final day of action in Athens and will be hoping to have sufficiently recovered by then.

Afterwards High Performance Coach Brian Nugent deemed himself satisfied with the work rate and progress made of his fledgling squad at this year’s European Championships.

“The work rate and the intensity of the performances has been phenomenal all week," said Nugent. "It hasn’t all been easy but the guys keep bouncing back and putting it on the line. It’s that kind of racing here, if you’re not on the limit you’re not in the race.

I’m particularly looking forward to tomorrow where we have two teams out in the Madison. This is a first for us and with our new coach, David Muntaner, the Madison World Champ in 2014, we’re really excited to see where we can go with this.”
