Ryan Rounds off Successful World Champion Campaign for Irish Track Cycling Team

Silver Medal and Five Top Six Results for Ireland at Track Cycling World Championships in Cali

Caroline Ryan finished a fine sixth place in the Points Race at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Colombia last weekend, rounding off a successful World Championship campaign for Ireland’s track cycling team. Earlier in the week Martyn Irvine secured silver in the Scratch Race, while nineteen year old Ryan Mullen narrowly missed out on Bronze in the Individual Pursuit. For a country with no indoor Velodrome, the small and talented Irish team continues to dominate on the World stage.

Ryan featured strongly across all events during the week, missing out on a Silver medal in the Scratch Race in the closing 100m, and coming sixth in the Pursuit and Points Race. Speaking after the Championships Ryan said “I came to the Worlds with the intention of competing for medals. This year I really wanted to be competitive and I believe I was, even more so than in the past. I would have loved to come away with a medal, but you can’t always control that. I am disappointed, but it won’t deter me from future goals. I know have the confidence that I can win at this level. I find that exciting going forward.”

Cycling Ireland Head Coach Brian Nugent was happy with Ryan’s performance in the Points Race, saying “That was another strong performance by Caroline, to round off a great week for the team. Caroline was aggressive and forced the main move, so I’m pleased with that. It’s only a matter of time until she lands a big result with that kind of racing style.”

This performance rounds up a successful World Championships bid for the Irish, with Martyn Irvine winning Silver in the Scratch Race and Ryan Mullen narrowly missing out on Bronze in the Individual Pursuit, in his Senior Track Cycling World Championship debut.

Nugent felt positive about the team’s performance saying “The team leave Cali with a silver and 5 top 6 results. That’s impressive from a squad of three riders competing in six events. It fills me with confidence for the future. It’s a World Class Team that set out goals, and they came here and delivered. Personally, I’m delighted with the way in which they delivered those results.”
