Dear Cycling Campaign Supporters,

Since our last newsletter there's has been been some highs and lows. We have had some pretty nice sunny days to enjoy cycling, a new chairperson... and we have also had a serious fatality on our city's streets and news of cycling funding being halted on some key projects.

Our sympathies go out to Donna Fox's family and friends. This is the 9th cyclist that has been killed on our roads this year. Unfortunately these accidents are preventable with the right health and safety measures with HGV's and investment in segregated cycling lanes.

With the latest funding withdrawals from the NTA for safe secure cycling, we will be drawing up plans for a major event in the coming weeks and to get Minister Shane Ross engaged with sustainable travel. We will hope you could take part and make your presence felt and show how cycling is important to you and that were not satisfied with the lack of investment in the city. Stay tune for updates on this on our social media channels or call in to our next Public Meeting on Monday.

Happy Cycling!

But during 700 years, WALL-E has developed a personality, and he's more than a little lonely. Then he spots EVE (Elissa Knight), a sleek and shapely probe sent back to Earth on a scanning mission. Smitten WALL-E embarks on his greatest adventure yet when he follows EVE across the galaxy.

Smart Cycling in Dublin Gets a Move On!

In all of the recent bad news related to cycling in Dublin and elsewhere, it is good to be able to report some positive news related to cycling!
We reported in our March Newsletter of the wonderful joint initiative we have with Dublin City Council and Enterprise Ireland to fund start up ideas on developing cycling. The first stage of this project has now been reached and 5 companies, from a total of more than 20 applications, have been chosen to develop their ideas, including our own Conor Cahill and Fluidedge with their ground breaking ‘Liberty Bell’ proposal.
Most of the companies chosen are Dublin based but See.Sense the Belfast company that produce the ‘intelligent’ ICON bike light are also in the frame.
You can find out more about the companies and their ideas on our website.

Dodder Greenway

Over the past few months we have been meeting with representatives of Cycling Ireland to investigate potential areas of cooperation and synergy. These meetings are at an early stage, but some basic exchanges have already occurred such as exchanges of newsletters, and direct links on each other’s web pages.
Cycling Ireland is a larger organisation focused more on sports cycling, but overall our discussions have clarified that the two organisations are essentially complementary, due to their different emphases. There is great scope for supporting each other’s activities in the following fields:
• Cycling Green Route development
• Road Safety Strategy
• Liaison with the public sector
• Cycle Training
• Major Events, including National Bikeweek
• Membership growth
Further meetings are scheduled for late February and early May. If you are interested in this topic and would like to be part of the process please contact Mike McKillen at mike@mckillen.com

#allocate4cycling

With recent happenings around safety and funding, this week we relaunched the Call to Action to ask Minister Shane Ross to #allocate4cycling
There's has been a positive response on our social media. As we don't have the sophisticated mailing front-end like some other NGOs, we have not idea how many email were sent, apart from those commented on in Twitter and Facebook.
Please, if you haven't already, take a few moments to copy/paste suggested text and send your own email to the Minister
This call to action, was originally announced back in June during Bike Week lecture in Wood Quay Venue by Cara Augustenborg (at her suggestion to use event as opportunity to mobilise support on a certain issue - funding was the one chosen at the time).

Our New Chairperson!

Dublin Cycling Campaign has a new Chairperson: Dr. Paul Corcoran. He is the 11th chairperson of the organisation since its foundation in 1993.
Paul studied microbiology and immunology in Maynooth University and completed his PhD in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is working as a Molecular Biology Lab Technician in the Dublin Institute of Technology. He is from Palmerstown originally and cycling in Dublin for over 20 years. He is a both a regular cycling commuter and a bicycle adventurer, having recently returned from a cycling trip in Iceland where he forged contact with our colleagues in the Icelandic Cycling Campaign! Paul has been one of the Campaign's lead members working on National Bike Week events for the last few years and has contributed to many of our other campaigns. He is also a member of the South Dublin County Council Cycling Forum (a sub-committee of the Transportation Strategic Policy Committee). He has a keen interest in photography and has supported the Campaign by taking positive photos of cycling around Dublin city.
On becoming Chairperson, his priorities are:
1) Ensuring that a high quality Liffey Cycle Route is constructed so that those arriving into the city from the West / western suburbs have a safe and attractive route - and that there is a terrific route for those wishing to access the Phoenix Park.
2) Seeing College Green transformed into a tram, pedestrian and cycle friendly space.
3) Working to ensure that Dublin Cycling Campaign, as a non-profit advocacy organisation for over 20 years, receives charitable status.
4) Bringing the Velo-city conference to Dublin in 2019
5) Working with Phil Skelton of the 1.5 Stayinalive campaign and introducing 1.5 metres minimum safe passing distance into Irish legislation

If you have any questions or suggestions for Paul, please pop along to our next meeting or email him on info@dublincycling.ie.

Love 30 Update

Love 30 has made the Project Edward Pledge aiming for no road deaths in Europe on 21 September. You can make the Pledge yourself and encourage your family and friends to do it too!

Love 30 made a submission to Dublin Council on the review of speed limits. We:
• welcomed the proposals for more 30 km/h limits in Dublin City
• especially welcomed 30 km/h between the Canals, which is of our key aspirations
• expressed disappointment that there are no proposals to reduce limits on the distributor roads

Love 30 has also made a submission to Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Council on their report on the review of speed limits. We told them we were very disappointed that their latest report excludes many of the residential roads that were included in the original proposal. We believe that the Council has missed an opportunity to ensure a safer and healthier future for the people of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. We urged the Council to introduce 30 km/h speed limits on all residential roads and to proceed without delay to introduce 30 km/h speed limits in the centres of towns and villages and in the vicinity of schools and other places of public assembly. The report is due to be discussed/voted on at next Moday’s Council meeting so it’s not too late for you to contact your local Councillors and give them your views.
