Irish Track Cycling Team Ready for World Championship Challenge in Colombia

The Irish Team has arrived in Cali, Colombia, ahead of the Track Cycling World Championships, which take place in the Alcides Nieto Patino Velodrome from the 26th February to the 2nd March 2014. Heading up the team is World Champion, Martyn Irvine, along with Caroline Ryan and Ryan Mullen, they will compete across six events over the Championships.

At last year’s World Championships Irvine made history when he won a World Title in the Scratch event, which was all the more impressive considering he won a silver in the Individual Pursuit less than an hour earlier.

This year two places were qualified in the Individual Pursuit and European U23 bronze medallist, Ryan Mullen, will be taking the second spot.

Caroline Ryan, who is ranked world number one in the Individual Pursuit, also performed strongly, finishing 5th at the last year’s World Championships.

Speaking from Cali Irish Head Coach Brian Nugent said “Preparations have been going really well. Caroline and Ryan have been here all week, settling in and getting used to the track. Martyn arrives in today from Denver.”

The Irish team have had a successful season in the lead up to the World Championships, and are looking forward to getting started.

Nugent said “The team have had a successful World Cup campaign building up to this. It will be a tough World Championships, as the World’s is always a different level. The best riders in the World will be here, and in their best form. But we’re looking forward to that. It’s what we’ve been building up to all year. We’re ready for the challenge, and we’re here to compete for medals.”

The UCI Track Cycling World Championships take place in Cali, Colombia, from the 26th February to the 2nd March 2014.
