Young, Smith and Doogan in Action for Team Ireland at Aigle World Juniors
Xeno Young and
Luke Smith finished 20th and 27th respectively in the
Men's Individual Pursuit at the World Junior Track Championships in
Aigle today.
Racing in the penultimate heat, National record holder Young stopped the clocks in 3m24.155s for his 3km effort which was good enough for the first year junior to secure a place well inside the top half of the large field.
Smith, too, will be buoyed by his ride which resulted in him shaving over 2.3s off the time set in the European Championships a week ago, making him the third fastest junior pursuiter over 3km in Irish cycling history.
Ciara Doogan got her assault on the Women’s Omnium off to a good start when she won her qualifying heat by lapping the field in the 10km Points Race.
Ciara finished 16th in the Scratch Race, the first of three races on Day One of the Omnium and followed that with 14th in the Individual Pursuit and finished the day with a fighting 9th place finish in the Elimination Race to lie 13th ahead of tomorrow’s final three races.
The World Junior Track Championships conclude tomorrow with Doogan set to complete her Omnium programme before Xeno Young and Luke Smith take to the boards for a final time in the Men's Madison.
