What is Track Cycling?

Track Cycling is an exhilarating bicycle racing sport usually held on specially built banked tracks or velodromes using track bicycles. The bicycles are fixed gear bikes with no brakes, the bike is propelled or slowed down by the pedal strokes of the cyclist.

In Ireland there are three outdoor velodromes:

  • Eamonn Ceannt Park, Sundrive Road, Crumlin, Dublin 12
  • Orangefield, Belfast
  • Kanturk, Co. Cork

If you are interested in trying out track cycling you need to get "accredited" first. To do this you can go to the track at a designated time and get coached by an expert, who will teach you the tricks of the trade. After that, provided you have the correct Cycling Ireland licence, you will be able to compete and take part in training sessions.

Track stars Felix English and Fintan Ryan will be hosting a Madison training day, accompanied by Cycling Ireland track coach Mark Kiely, on Monday 3rd July. This is for any CI member who has been accredited on the track. Entry is €10 - including bike rental.
